Oncorhynchus tshawytscha
From the Greek words onkos (hook), rynchos (nose) and tshawytscha (the common name for the species in Siberia and Alaska).

By the time spawning is completed the salmon is emaciated and near death. The time period between the cessation of feeding and the completion of spawning can be up to six months and the salmon dies soon afterwards. Although tragic, this life cycle is very successful and salmon are one of the most resilient species in the sea.

Hamish and a (reasonable) salmonHi. My name's Hamish Horton. I work as an Anaesthetist in Christchurch, New Zealand, a small city just a short drive from some of the best salmon rivers in the world.

I've been hooked on the chinook salmon ever since a colleague took me fishing on the Rangitata River during the 1996-97 season.

What an experience that was! I've never forgotten it.

Like most of us who fish for salmon, I am delighted by its sheer power and beauty.

I'm also intrigued by the the things I'm learning about nature and life in general as I get to know more about this awesome fish.

Malcolm BellSo is Malcolm Bell, who's given me a lot of help with this video.

He is well known in this country's salmon fraternity. From his fishing store in this city, The Complete Angler, Malcolm has been right at the centre of upgrading the equipment and techniques for New Zealand salmon fishermen. He knows a lot about catching fish, and explains his approach to the sport. And he also tells you a little about his own Christian journey.

OK, now why did I make this video?

I put it together for two reason. For one, because I want to share with you my delight in salmon and fishing for them. And secondly, I wanted to act on a distinct prompting I've had to raise some issues with other fishermen — they're very personal issues, but are also critical from an eternal perspective. Of course I've done this sensitively because I respect your private opinions.

So, thank you for your interest in my video. I trust you will enjoy it.

Good fishing!
